Grief can feel overwhelming, especially after losing a beloved animal. Our hearts ache, our minds race, and the body carries tension long after the tears have dried. In these moments, one powerful tool to help navigate emotional turbulence is heart coherence.
Heart coherence is a simple, evidence-based practice that aligns the heart and the nervous system, creating a state of calm and balance. When we are in heart coherence, stress hormones decrease, emotional regulation improves, and our capacity to feel love and connection is restored; even in the midst of grief.
The concept of heart coherence is supported by research from HeartMath, an organisation specialising in heart–brain connection and emotional regulation. Studies show that the heart communicates with the brain and the body in a continuous feedback loop.
When the heart rhythm is erratic due to stress, grief, or anxiety, the nervous system can become dis-regulated, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and unable to process emotions clearly.
Heart coherence helps restore harmony between heart and brain, creating a physiological state that supports clarity, emotional resilience, and calm. It encourages the parasympathetic nervous system to activate, which is responsible for rest, digestion, and repair, counteracting the fight or flight stress response.
In simple terms, heart coherence helps the body and mind align, so that grief can be processed without being trapped in reactive cycles of worry, guilt, or despair. It gives caregivers and pet parents a practical, research backed tool to support themselves and their animals during difficult transitions.
By practising heart coherence, you are not just “relaxing”; you are creating a measurable physiological state that enhances emotional stability, fosters presence, and strengthens your ability to respond to grief with compassion; for yourself and your beloved animal.
How Heart Coherence Helps During Pet Loss
Reduces overwhelm: When emotions feel unmanageable, heart coherence helps bring physiological balance, allowing you to process grief without being swept away.
Supports clarity: It helps the mind slow down and focus, which can be especially helpful during anticipatory grief or making end-of-life decisions for your pet.
Fosters emotional connection: By calming the nervous system, you can more fully be present with your animal during their final days, offering comfort and reassurance.
Encourages self-compassion: Heart coherence creates a space for gentleness toward yourself, reducing guilt, regret, or self blame that often accompanies loss.
A Simple Heart Coherence Practice
Pause and settle: Sit or lie down comfortably. Close your eyes if you feel safe doing so.
Focus on the heart: Place your hand over your heart and bring your attention to the area.
Breathe with intention: Inhale slowly for a count of five, then exhale for a count of five. Imagine the breath flowing in and out of your heart space.
Invoke positive feelings: Recall a memory of your animal that brings warmth; their wagging tail, soft purr, playful antics or simply offer yourself a phrase of kindness like “May I feel peace and love.”
Continue for 3–5 minutes: Notice the rhythm of your breath and heartbeat. Allow a sense of calm to ripple through your body.
This practice can be done anytime you feel grief surging, before, during, or after your pet’s passing. Even a few minutes can help regulate your nervous system and bring a sense of grounded presence.
By integrating heart coherence into your grief journey, you create a gentle bridge between heart and mind. You are supported in feeling your loss, honouring your animal, and slowly finding steadiness to carry forward; without diminishing the depth of your love or the significance of your grief.
